US oilfield barite is mostly a drilling-fluid weighting problem, not a geology brochure. Mud houses and service desks need density that clears the checks they actually run — often framed against API Specification 13A — and a cadence that repeats. A tonne that cannot ship again next month is rarely useful.
The product page is API barite. The industry frame is oil and gas drilling.
What the brief must say
- Density or specific gravity the mud system needs.
- Grind / particle size the plant accepts.
- Soluble metals or impurity limits in the company or API-style sheet.
- Monthly vs spot volume and the US port or warehouse.
- Packing — bulk, big bags or containers.
Write those in the first lines of the trade inquiry. A mineral name alone is not a brief.
API Spec 13A is a guide, not a sticker on this website
Buyers often reference API Spec 13A for weighting materials. NAGTAR treats that language as a specification guide. Lot conformity is confirmed with data for the qualified parcel. We do not print a blanket certificate on an unnamed tonne.
If your house mud spec is tighter than a generic API label, send the house limits. The offer follows the tighter sheet.
Gulf Coast reality
Much US barite offtake sits near Gulf Coast logistics. Distributors already qualified with mud houses can place trial bags faster than a full end-user homologation. Direct programmes with oilfield service groups remain possible. They usually take longer. We do not claim open tenders from named majors on this site.
Algeria first, other origins for continuity
Algeria is the primary origin we review. Exportable monthly cadence must be proven — a national production headline is not a standing allocation. Partner producers in other countries are qualified so geopolitics, plant turnarounds or vessel delays do not break a contracted density grade.
That is the same continuity logic we use across NAGTAR commodities: primary origin, backup origins, same grade family.
Do not confuse with precipitated BaSO₄
Coatings plants that need precipitated barium sulfate are on a different page: precipitated barium sulfate. Oilfield weighting and paint fillers share a chemical formula family. They do not share the commercial grade.
How a first programme usually moves
- Technical brief (density, grind, impurities, cadence, destination).
- Sample or lab sheet for a candidate lot.
- Trial parcel under agreed inspection.
- Recurring monthly or multi-month frame with disclosed backup origins.
Public research — USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries, USITC DataWeb, the US HTS — helps desks size the market. Classification and duty for a real shipment are confirmed with your broker. Those links are research tools, not a NAGTAR quote.
When the density window and the cadence are clear, send the inquiry. We will say whether an Algeria-first path with multi-country backup looks executable — including when the answer is no.
